In the black-and-white opening sequence of Casino Royale, James Bond makes the first of the two kills required to earn his 00 status.
During the brutal fight in the men’s lavatory of a cricket club in Lahore, Daniel Craig wears an unusually informal short-sleeved shirt beneath his dark navy linen suit. The original was created for the production by Academy Costumes of London.
Twenty years later, Anthony Sinclair and Academy Costumes have returned to the original patterns and cutting notes to recreate the shirt for the first time.
Made from exceptionally lightweight 110g/m² pure linen, the cloth is woven with blue and white yarns to create its distinctive sky-blue appearance. The First Kill Shirt faithfully reproduces the original’s tall two-button spread collar, front placket and short sleeves.
The short sleeves are an unusual choice beneath a suit, but particularly appropriate for the younger, tougher and more physical Bond introduced in Casino Royale. They also provide an intriguing connection to Ian Fleming, who was himself fond of short-sleeved shirts and frequently dressed his literary James Bond in them.
The First Kill Shirt is the second collaboration between Anthony Sinclair and Academy Costumes commemorating the 20th anniversary of Casino Royale, following the recreation of the Madagascar outfit earlier this year.
